L\u2019amplitude de mouvement r\u00e9duite peut provoquer des douleurs, limiter la capacit\u00e9 de fonctionnement d\u2019une personne et augmenter le risque d\u2019usure de la peau (plaies cutan\u00e9es) et d\u2019escarres. L\u2019amplitude des mouvements diminue g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement avec l\u2019\u00e2ge, bien que cela n\u2019emp\u00eache g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement pas les personnes \u00e2g\u00e9es en bonne sant\u00e9 de prendre soin d\u2019elles-m\u00eames.\n<br><br>Avant le d\u00e9but de la th\u00e9rapie, le kin\u00e9sith\u00e9rapeute \u00e9value souvent l\u2019amplitude des mouvements \u00e0 l\u2019aide d\u2019un instrument appel\u00e9 un goniom\u00e8tre, qui mesure l\u2019angle maximal de d\u00e9placement d\u2019une articulation. Le kin\u00e9sith\u00e9rapeute d\u00e9termine \u00e9galement si la diminution de mobilit\u00e9 articulaire est due \u00e0 la raideur des ligaments, des tendons ou \u00e0 une contracture musculaire. S\u2019il s\u2019agit d\u2019une contracture musculaire, l\u2019articulation peut \u00eatre mobilis\u00e9e plus vigoureusement. En cas de raideur ligamentaire ou tendineuse, l\u2019\u00e9tirement doit \u00eatre plus prudent, et une intervention chirurgicale est parfois n\u00e9cessaire pour obtenir des progr\u00e8s. Les \u00e9tirements sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement plus efficaces et moins douloureux lorsque les tissus sont \u00e9chauff\u00e9s. De ce fait, les kin\u00e9sith\u00e9rapeutes pourront d\u2019abord appliquer une source de chaleur.\n<br><br><b>Il existe trois types d\u2019exercices de mobilisation articulaire :<\/b>\n<br><b>\u2022\tExercice actif :<\/b> ce type d\u2019exercice est con\u00e7u pour les personnes en mesure de contracter un muscle ou de bouger une articulation sans aide. Elles doivent pouvoir d\u00e9placer leurs membres elles-m\u00eames.\n<br><b>\u2022\tExercice actif aid\u00e9 :<\/b> ce type d\u2019exercice est con\u00e7u pour les personnes qui peuvent contracter leurs muscles avec un peu d\u2019aide ou qui peuvent bouger leurs articulations, mais ressentent de la douleur quand elles le font. Les personnes d\u00e9placent leurs membres elles-m\u00eames, avec l\u2019assistance du kin\u00e9sith\u00e9rapeute qui utilise ses mains ou des bandes ou d\u2019autres \u00e9quipements.\n<br><b>\u2022\tExercice passif :<\/b> ce type d\u2019exercice est effectu\u00e9 lorsqu\u2019une participation active de la personne n\u2019est pas possible. Aucun effort n\u2019est n\u00e9cessaire de la part de la personne. Entre autres objectifs, le th\u00e9rapeute bouge ses membres pour \u00e9viter les contractures (raideur permanente des muscles r\u00e9sultant d\u2019un manque de mouvement).\n<br><br>Les exercices de mobilisation actifs aid\u00e9s ou passifs sont r\u00e9alis\u00e9s avec pr\u00e9caution pour \u00e9viter de blesser la personne, bien qu\u2019un certain inconfort soit difficilement \u00e9vitable.\n<br>Afin d\u2019augmenter l\u2019amplitude de mouvement, le kin\u00e9sith\u00e9rapeute doit mobiliser l\u2019articulation raidie jusqu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019apparition d\u2019une douleur, mais le mouvement ne doit pas provoquer de douleurs r\u00e9siduelles (douleurs qui persistent une fois le mouvement termin\u00e9).
